A desert sunrise, a mountain sunset, and some gorgeous stars to end the night
Anna & Erick
These two adorable adventurers came at me saying all my favorite things. “We’d like to do a sunrise but also some shots at night if we can.” Ummmmm yes, please! I get why some photographers would prefer to do all consecutive coverage. But personally, I love mixing things up and doing multiple times of day with the same couple. I don’t mind leaving home more than once in a day, especially if it’s to go to different places with different lighting and get to make the absolute most of what beautiful Tucson has to offer.
Sunrise is quite possibly my favorite time of day to photograph couples. There’s hardly anyone else around, and the light is unmatched, plus it opens up location opportunities that you might not get at sunset.
And as for nighttime star photos, well… it’s no secret that we elopement photographers are obsessed with stars, and I am no exception. I was thrilled to be able to get some practice at elopement astrophotography with Anna and Erick. (See this elopement from 2023 to see my first attempt at it!)
These two are avid national park travelers, and since Anna had never been to Saguaro National Park before, they thought, why not get some epic Saguaro National Park elopement photos done, since they didn’t get any when they got legally married a few months earlier.
To get the best of multiple worlds, I suggested that we do some golden hour desert photos at one of my favorite sunrise spots in Saguaro. Followed by meeting back up for sunset at Windy Point on Mount Lemmon, where we stayed for some amazing shots at dusk (I’m also quite obsessed with lantern photos at the moment). And finally, we headed further up Mount Lemmon to get some star photos. It’s really amazing how many stars we can still see in Tucson, even with the city glowing down below. The couple were completely lit only by the moon and the city.
This combo of sessions really couldn’t have gone better! Anna and Erick were so goofy and fun - my kind of people. :) They took some photos in regular clothes for some variety, before changing into their gorgeous wedding attire. (Many thanks to my pop-up changing tent for enabling this :P) They even did a first look during their sunrise session, since they never saw each other all done up!
This may not have been their actual wedding day, but I still feel I got to do some great work as a Tucson elopement photographer. I love these photos and I hope you do, too!
